About

“Unrecognized Stories” is the project of independent Ukrainian journalists Tatiana Kozak and Anastasia Magazova.

The project’s name comes from the “unrecognized states” – territories appeared after the fall of the USSR in early 90-ies. We are talking here about such self-proclaimed states as South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia, Transnistria in Moldova, Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan. A quarter of a century later the states are still not recognized and conflicts called “frozen”.

Unrecognized Stories are about people living in the states that don’t exist. After 25 years on non-recognition, do they feel disappointed or hopeful? What problems do they encounter as citizens of these territories?

During this project, we want to find out possible prospects for Ukraine’s occupied and annexed territories – in Donbass and Crimea. We will try to answer the question – are there ways for reconciliation?

We believe in the power of balanced reporting, and peace journalism, which is so needed in war-torn Ukraine.

The project Unrecognized Stories is supported by PressStart crowdfunding platform.
